What does a property lawyer do in Queensland?

How do I write a Blog ???

Introduction

My name is George Sourris, and I am the Legal Practice Director of Empire Legal.

Empire Legal is a property focused boutique law firm, located in QLD. You will find me at one of our three offices:

  • Spring Hill in Brisbane’s CBD;
  • Manly at Brisbane’s Bayside; and
  • Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.

There we go again. Being a typical lawyer. All fact and little emotion. Lets try again….

TAKE 2: The date is Wednesday 05 October 2022, and this is my first blog - in what will become regular content creation for anyone interested in the topics surrounding Queensland Property.

Whilst I do publish a significant amount of written content as a lawyer, this style of writing (creative) is not very often showcased by the professionals within the legal world.

We are often glued to our desks – helping clients, writing legal letters of advice, or arguing with lawyers on the other side of matters. I believe it is quite rare for a lawyer to sit, without a stressful time deadline – to simply publish content to help people understand more about who they are, and what they do, and how they can help.

Who am I?

I am George Sourris. I am 32 years old, and I have been working as a lawyer for just over 5 years. Before entering the profession, I worked for Apple Inc for 5 years, across their retail stores in Victoria and Queensland. I also spent several months at their HQ in Silicone Valley (California, USA).

Before a life of the law and being a tech nerd; I spent 4 years as a bartender / gaming attendant at the Manly Hotel, in Brisbane’s Bayside. When I am not being a lawyer I enjoy: boating, the ocean, hanging out with my dog Vinny and anything outdoors…although I am a sucker for a good movie!

The skills I learnt across the hospitality and retail industry I believe really helped me gain an edge over my colleagues in the legal space – gaining the invaluable skill of being able to talk to people. It is no secret that communication when broken down, leads to the lion share of issues that we face as humans.

My business partner (Abi Wright) and I agreed on day 1 that Empire Legal would be built around absolute relentless client care via open channels of transparent communication. That would be the way that we forge a name in our industry. Fast forward to today, and we have over 1,300 five star Google reviews from our wonderful clients (and we are just getting started).

What do we do?

Most people place conveyancing on the ‘I hate it, I hate it, make it stop’ list. We aim to change that. In fact, we want you to get excited about buying or selling your place.

We take care of the legals from before you sign a contract to buy or sell, right through to settlement, and beyond! We are not a transactional business – we are here to build a lifelong relationship with our clients - based on trust.

We are your guide, your friend and your biggest supporter throughout your property journey. We only want what is best for you (we have a duty to our client as part of our oath as lawyers). Everything we do is to serve our clients and support them absolutely. 😊

What do we want to achieve?

For our clients:

It’s our job to make your process simple. Also, you’ll be pleased to know that we keep the boring legal stuff locked away in an underground cellar, so you never have to see it.

Success for us looks like: you having a great buying/selling experience, to the point where you refer our services to your family and friends. We want the client experience to be unparalleled in our space, and for Empire Legal to be the obvious choice for the everyday Aussie when it comes to buying or selling a property.

Our promise to you is 100% satisfaction – every time.

For these blog posts:

I want to debunk myths, explain legal jargon, upskill and educate and genuinely add real value to the audience. I will provide simple answers to things like:

  • When should I engage a lawyer?
  • What other professionals do I need on my property buying journey?
  • When can I collect my keys?
  • What is Transfer Duty? How much is it? When do I have to pay it?
  • What happens if there is a problem with the property – how do we negotiate?
  • Can I move in early?
  • What happens if I cannot settle on the contracted date?
  • How much does it cost?

What is next?

My commitment to the reader is to bring valuable, easy to digest topics to anyone interested in learning more about QLD property. As a boutique Property Law Firm, we come across a wide range of topics that we want to share with our clients, peers and anyone interested in learning more.

If you have any feedback/ideas/thoughts or requests on a future topic – I want to hear from you. I can be easily reached at: george@empirelegal.com.au.

Thanks so much.

George Sourris LLB.
